I am the author of em>The Secret Language of Sacred Spaces: Decoding the Churches, Temples, Mosques and other Places of Worship Around the World, Cathedral: The Great English Cathedrals and the World That Made Them (Constable, 2007; paperback edition, 2011) and the presenter of BBCTV’s How to Build a Cathedral (2008), as well as numerous academic papers and pieces of journalism; including Westbury on Trym: monastery, minster and college (2010) with Nicholas Orme and Medieval Art, Architecture and History of Bristol Cathedral: an enigma explored (2011) co-edited with Beth Williamson.

I am also in demand as a lecturer, speaker and tour guide; I am particularly busy with tours for Martin Randall Travel, as an accredited NADFAS lecturer and through my tours based at Villiers Park, nr Cambridge.   

I currently teach most often at the University of Bristol.

I have a degree in the History of Art from the University of Sussex, and a Certificate in Journalism for Graduates from the (then) London College of Printing. I am also a capitular canon at Bristol Cathedral.

For several years after leaving university, I worked on oral and local history and place-based community theatre projects in and around London.

I then entered journalism, becoming the first press officer for the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England in 1993, and building a small strategic Communications Unit for that organisation. On the merger of the Commission with English Heritage I worked on internet and ‘peer’ communication; I went freelance to focus on my writing, teaching and academic interests in 2003.
